About the destination
Lamu feels like a step back in time — there's only one vehicle on the whole island, so people travel on foot, by donkey, or aboard traditional dhows. An eight-mile deserted beach lines the ocean side, backed by dunes, coconut and mango plantations, and small villages, while the Old Town's narrow Swahili streets carry over a thousand years of Omani, Indian, and Portuguese trading history. Just across the channel from Shela, Manda Island offers the same laid-back Lamu spirit with a quieter, more private beachfront feel — ideal for a festival stay away from the crowds while still a short boat ride from all the action in Shela.
Where you stay
Lamu
A privately owned beachfront hotel on Manda Island with sweeping views over the bay to Lamu Island. 39 air-conditioned suites in timeless Lamu Island style, each 35–45m² with a sitting area and en-suite bathroom. Two bars, two pools, a full water sports activity center (kitesurfing, windsurfing, deep-sea fishing, full-moon dhow cruises), and a restaurant with panoramic bay views.
4 nights · Half-Board
When to go
Early November lands right at the start of the North-East Trade wind season, which brings calm seas through April — great for the Majlis's water sports lineup, from kitesurfing to deep-sea fishing. As with the Peponi property, this is festival season, so rooms book out fast around the event dates.
