An audio guide walks you through the events of 1994 and Rwanda's road toward reconciliation. Laying a wreath here is a quiet moment many travelers don't expect this early in a trip.

Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel → Volcanoes National Park headquarters
A short pre-dawn drive to park headquarters for briefing, tea, and coffee, and an introduction to the local porters who'll be with you throughout.
An unscripted trek — anywhere from 90 minutes to a full morning through bamboo and montane forest, depending on which gorilla family you're assigned. Then a full hour in the company of a wild silverback and his family, your guide positioning you for the clearest views and best light.

About the destination
Rwanda earns its nickname honestly. From the air, the "Land of a Thousand Hills" unfolds in ridge after green ridge, terraced slopes giving way to volcanic peaks on the horizon. Kigali sits across this rolling terrain at an elevation that keeps the air mild year-round — a capital rebuilt with striking intention, now home to a growing arts scene alongside sites of deep historical weight. The real draw sits three hours north, where the Virunga Mountains rise into cloud. Volcanoes National Park protects five of the range's eight volcanoes and, within its bamboo and montane forest, roughly half the world's remaining wild mountain gorillas.
Where you stay
Kigali
A calm, European-inspired base in the capital. Deluxe rooms open onto south-facing balconies overlooking the pool and gardens, ideal for easing into the trip or unwinding before an early flight home.
1 night
Musanze
An intimate, owner-run lodge just fifteen minutes from park headquarters. Rooms and cottages sit among gardens with volcano views; farm-to-table meals, a small spa, and fireside lounges make it a proper basecamp for trekking days. Every stay supports local conservation and artisan communities.
2 nights
When to go
This is a low-season package. Gorilla trekking is available year-round in Rwanda, where pleasant year-round temperatures of 16–27°C make for exceptional wildlife encounters. While the driest months (June to August and December to February) offer the easiest trail conditions, traveling during the low season from November to May allows guests to take advantage of special promotional gorilla trekking permit rates. The wetter months also bring lush, green landscapes and fewer visitors on the trails, though forest paths can be muddier and treks slightly more demanding.
Getting there
All road transfers between Kigali and Volcanoes National Park are private, with the Kigali–Musanze leg running two and a half to three hours each way.
