About the destination
To visit the mystical island of Lamu is to take a step back in time. There is only one vehicle on this UNESCO World Heritage island — otherwise people walk, ride donkeys, or sail on traditional Arab sailboats called dhows and ngalawas. The ocean side is fronted by a vast eight-mile deserted beach, with commanding dunes sheltering coconut and mango plantations and small villages behind. At the heart of the island is Lamu Old Town, where narrow winding paths and traditional Swahili architecture reflect a thousand years of Omani, Indian, and Portuguese trade. Shela is the small beach community within walking distance of Old Town — beloved for its laid-back nature, incredible food, vibrant art scene, and authentic Swahili culture.
Where you stay
Shela Beach, Lamu Island
A boutique retreat on Lamu Island's idyllic Shela Beach, Peponi Hotel blends Swahili charm with over 50 years of Korschen family hospitality. Originally opened in 1967, the hotel has grown to 29 unique ocean-view rooms and apartments, each with Swahili-inspired interiors and private verandas. Cuisine is sustainably driven by the tides — and the locally popular bar is one of Lamu's most beloved sundowner spots.

When to go
Lamu can be visited year-round, but the North-East Trade wind season (November to April) brings the calmest waters — ideal for snorkelling, fishing, and dhow sailing. Low season months still offer warmth and fewer visitors.
Getting there
Scheduled Safarilink flights connect Nairobi Wilson Airport with Lamu Manda Airport (approx. 2 hrs 15 min each way), followed by a short transfer to Peponi Hotel on Shela Beach.
