About the destination
To visit the mystical island of Lamu is to take a step back in time. There is only one vehicle on this UNESCO World Heritage island — otherwise people walk, ride donkeys, or sail on traditional Arab sailboats called dhows and ngalawas. The ocean side is fronted by a vast eight-mile deserted beach, with commanding dunes sheltering coconut and mango plantations and small villages behind. At the heart of the island is Lamu Old Town, where narrow winding paths and traditional Swahili architecture reflect a thousand years of Omani, Indian, and Portuguese trade. Shela is the small beach community within walking distance of Old Town — beloved for its laid-back nature, incredible food, vibrant art scene, authentic Swahili culture, and some of Kenya's most pristine marine environments.

Manda Bay can be visited year-round. The North-East Trade wind season (November to April) brings the calmest waters for snorkelling, deep-sea fishing, and watersports — while the low season offers lush landscapes and a quieter Lamu experience.
